TRACK 1 Radio broadcast — 氣候峰會新聞報道 / Climate Summit News Report (Mandarin)
[Scene: Radio news broadcast. Announcer speaking in a formal tone.]

TRACK 2 Conversation — 兩位朋友談論環保生活 / Two friends discuss eco-living (Mandarin)
[Scene: Two university students, Mingxia and Jiahao, talk at a café.]

[Scene: A young environmental activist gives a speech at a school assembly.]

[Scene: A podcast interview with urban planner Mr Chen Weiming.]

Paper 2 is marked holistically across three components. Each component is marked out of 20, giving a total of 60 marks.
Band Marks Communication (交流) Range & Accuracy (語言範疇與準確性) Pronunciation & Intonation (發音與語調)
5 17–20 Communicates with ease and confidence. Develops ideas spontaneously, handles unexpected questions fluently. No significant breakdowns. Wide range of vocabulary and complex structures. Minor errors only, do not impede understanding. Consistent tense control. Pronunciation is consistently accurate and natural. Intonation is appropriate and easy to follow throughout.
4 13–16 Communicates effectively with occasional hesitation. Generally responds to questions fully with relevant detail. Good range of vocabulary with some complex structures. Some errors in agreement, tense or aspect but meaning clear. Pronunciation generally accurate. Some interference from L1 but does not significantly impede communication.
3 9–12 Communicates with some success. Some hesitation and reliance on simpler structures. Some responses are incomplete. Adequate range. Repetitive vocabulary. Errors sometimes impede meaning, especially in complex utterances. Pronunciation generally intelligible but errors are noticeable. Intonation sometimes causes misunderstanding.
2 5–8 Communication is limited. Short, formulaic responses. Frequent breakdowns requiring examiner support. Limited vocabulary. Mostly simple structures. Frequent errors often impede meaning. Pronunciation errors frequent and sometimes impede understanding significantly.
1 1–4 Very limited communication. Minimal relevant response. Relies heavily on English or non-verbal cues. Very restricted vocabulary. Isolated words/phrases. Errors are pervasive. Pronunciation makes comprehension very difficult.
Task 1 Photo Card — Sample High Band Response (Band 4–5)
Cantonese — Examiner Q1:

Task 2 Role Play — Examiner Notes
  • Examiner plays a curious but initially sceptical friend. Should push back gently on claims (e.g., "但係素食唔係好難做到咩?").
  • Candidate must initiate the question (?) naturally. Prompt once only if candidate forgets.
  • Award communication marks holistically across the interaction, not per bullet point.
  • If candidate cannot produce the question spontaneously, deduct up to 2 marks from Communication.

Model Translation — Section B

In recent years, the speed of renewable energy development has been remarkable. The cost of solar panels has fallen by 90 percent over the past decade, making them affordable for a growing number of households. At the same time, the efficiency of wind turbines has also improved significantly — a single modern wind turbine generates enough electricity to supply one thousand homes for an entire year. Despite this, renewable energy still accounts for only 30 percent of the world's energy supply. To truly achieve an energy transition, governments must invest more funding and adjust existing energy policies to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Key terms underlined — deduct 1 mark per significant mistranslation of highlighted terms. Accept reasonable paraphrases of non-highlighted sections.

Task 4 — Model Letter (Band 5, ~160 characters)
