A Section A — Chinese New Year Preparations
Recording Script (Mandarin) — For Teacher / Marking Use Only [Scene: A family conversation between a mother (媽媽) and teenage daughter (女兒) discussing Chinese New Year preparations at home in London]

B Section B — Mid-Autumn Festival Radio Broadcast
Recording Script (Mandarin) — For Teacher / Marking Use Only [Scene: A cultural radio programme on a Chinese-language station in Britain discussing the Mid-Autumn Festival]

C Section C — Interview with an Overseas Chinese Student
Recording Script (Mandarin) — For Teacher / Marking Use Only [Scene: A podcast interview with 18-year-old Wei Chen (陳威), a Chinese-British student who was born in Manchester but has family roots in Guangdong Province]

D Section D — Documentary on the Dragon Boat Festival
Recording Script (Mandarin) — For Teacher / Marking Use Only [Scene: A cultural documentary narration about the Dragon Boat Festival (端午節) and its connection to Chinese identity abroad]

A1 Article 1 — The Cultural Significance of Mid-Autumn Festival

A2 Article 2 — East and West: A Comparison of Food Cultures

Section B — Translation (Q21) — Model Answer

Model Translation

Traditional festivals are the most authentic expression of a nation's culture. Through festivals, we can understand a people's history, beliefs and values. For overseas Chinese, traditional festivals are not merely occasions for celebration but also an important means of passing down culture and connecting with future generations. Even when living far from home, many Chinese families still insist on celebrating Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival in traditional ways. This insistence is not stubbornness; it is respect for one's roots and the best gift one can give to the next generation. Culture does not disappear because of immigration; rather, it becomes all the more precious when one is far from home.

Marking guidance (12 marks): Award marks for accurate rendering of key terms highlighted above. Accept natural English equivalents. Deduct marks for omissions of key content; do not penalise for stylistic rephrasing. Award 10–12 for fluent, accurate translation covering all key points; 7–9 for mostly accurate with minor omissions; 4–6 for significant inaccuracies; 1–3 for very limited accuracy.
